Cambodia and Indonesia look to rice trading, tourism, and possible direct flight

PHNOM PENH, Dec.
24, 2013 – Cambodia’s Deputy Prime Minister His Excellency Dr. Sok An
exchanged view with the outgoing Indonesian Ambassador H.E. Soehardjono
Sastromihardjo on Tuesday that Cambodia has high potential in the areas of rice
production, tourism and that a direct flight should be created as it will
contribute to boosting the tourism sector.
During the
farewell meeting, His Excellency Dr. Sok An, Minister in Charge of the Office
of the Council of Ministers, said that Cambodia has rice surplus of 4 million
tons last year and is seeking foreign traders, including Indonesians, to invest
in rice export from Cambodia.
Cambodia sees
Indonesia as a rice market and that Indonesian traders should look to invest in
the commodity in the Kingdom, he said.
“They do not
have to start with large scale investment of hundreds of millions of dollar,
but they can start with medium scale of rice trading which is more convenient,”
H.E. Dr. Sok An told the diplomat.
In response, His
Excellency Ambassador said that, “Indonesia and Cambodia signed an MOU on rice
trading last year and now Indonesia has more options to buy rice from
Cambodia”.
The Indonesian
plan seems to match with Cambodia’s goal on how to “organize rice for export,”
said His Excellency Dr. Sok An in the meeting.
Cambodia has
planned to export one million tons of milled rice by 2015 to countries in the
region and others.
H.E. Dr. Sok An
said, “we consider how to export rice to Indonesia where you have rice market.
Cambodian businessmen want to export the commodity to Indonesia yet they do not
know how to do that.”
The two-way
trade value between Cambodia and Indonesia is small.
TOURISM
The Deputy Prime
Minister also said that the Kingdom of Wonder has high potentials in
the tourism sector. The number of tourist arrivals has increased between
15 to 20 percent per annum.
Cambodia
received 3.58 million tourists last year; that figure is expected to increase
to 4.2 million this year. Siem Reap province, the home of Angkor, is the
country’s biggest tourist destination.
The Kingdom
expects to receive 4.5 million tourists by 2015 and 7 millions in 2020 thanks
to the Kingdom’s richness in cultural heritage of an estimated 1,000 historic
temples and eco-tourism nationwide, in addition to political stability and
peace.
“When we will
have more tourists, business people can look to invest in other business such
as restaurants, hospitalities and others to support the sector,” Dr. Sok An
said.
The outgoing
Ambassador recalled that leaders of the two countries, met on the sideline of
ASEAN Summit and other related Summit Meetings in Bali in November this year,
and had discussed about the possibility of direct flight between
Indonesia and Cambodia.
His Excellency
Ambassador Soehardjono Sastromihardjo told His Excellency Dr. Sok An that both
sides are still working on the deal, and hoped that an Indonesian private
carrier will have direct flight to Cambodia in the future.
Both sides
shared views about the possibilities of two Kingdoms one destination,
referring to a good experience that Cambodia and Thailand are doing to attract
more tourists to visit Angkor.
“We can do the
same with Indonesia,” H.E. Dr. Sok An told the diplomat.
During the high
season of tourism, more flights land at the airport in Siem Reap, the home of
Angkor, about 20 flights daily more than the International Airport of Phnom
Penh, H.E. Dr. Sok An said.
Both sides hoped
that if there were direct flights from Indonesian islands like Bali or Java that
would boost tourism for both countries.
Cambodia is
ready to facilitate direct flights as part of the government’s open sky policy
to attract more investment and tourists from Indonesia to the Kingdom of
Wonder.
More than 22,000
Indonesian visitors travelled to Cambodia last year, according to the ministry
of tourism data, and from January to October this year the number of
Indonesian tourists to Cambodia has increased to nearly 23,000.
His Excellency
Ambassador congratulated the Royal Government of Cambodia and its people for
the successful general election in July.
“The election
result has been implemented by the government in a peaceful manner,” said the
diplomat, and Jakarta is looking forward to work closer with Phnom Penh.
“Our bilateral relations
has been improved from time to time,” said the Ambassador during his farewell
meeting.
